Gunshots allegedly rang out outside an apartment on Rifle Range Road late on Friday following a clash between two groups over possession of a plot of land.
Police have denied any incident of firing in the area.
No one was injured, the police said.
Eyewitnesses have told the police that around 11.30pm, residents of Rifle Residency reported the sound of gunshots. Some of them have told the police they saw a group of men chasing another down the road. The police said residents shut their doors and windows in panic.
Two people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the clash.
The arrested were identified as Chandan Yadav alias Bittu and Ram Das. Both have criminal antecedents, the police said.
Das is the brother of Suraj Shaw who has allegedly been at odds with Yadav for years, allegedly over establishing his territorial rights over parts of Ballygunge, Bondel Gate and Tiljala, a section of residents said.
The two groups have clashed in Ballygunge in the past but this was the first time that firing has been reported, some residents said. Senior police officers said the two brothers — Shaw and Das — were arrested a few months back and had recently been released on bail.
“The brothers were arrested a few months back for their alleged involvement in a clash on Bondel Road,” said a senior police officer. “We have arrested two men so far.”
The two groups have allegedly been at war over possession of a large parcel of land in Palpara in Ward 65, covering parts of Ballygunge, Park Circus, Gobra and Tiljala.
Earlier, Yadav allegedly decided which syndicates would supply building material to housing projects in the locality. But in 2018, some of his aides deserted him, local residents said.
The police said on Friday night, Yadav was at his home with a few of his aides when Shaw and Das turned up with their associates and asked him to leave the area.
A heated exchange of words was allegedly followed by a scuffle between the two groups that finally led to the clash, the police said.
