People from different parts of New Town have come together for planting saplings and flower plants on median dividers and parks.
The group, comprising people from different walks of life, including doctors, software engineers, students and senior citizens, meet on holidays with flower plants and saplings to plant on the median dividers and parks across New Town.
On Tuesday, the group selected a median divider in BA Block and planted at least 15 saplings of various species.
Biswajit Majumder, a New Town resident and a member of the group, said that it started as an informal gathering of three-four persons who would bring plants from home and plant them anywhere where they could spot an empty patch of land.
The group now has at least 20 volunteers, he said. “We are specifically targeting the median dividers inside the blocks. The dividers on the main roads of New Town have excellent avenue plantation and we also want to have extra greenery inside the blocks and the dividers are ideal for that,” said Majumder.
Sukanta Pal, another member of the group, said the saplings had been planted in multiple areas of Action Area II. According to Majumder and Pal, they had set a target to plant at least 1,000 plants by the end of this year.
“The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) carries out extensive avenue plantation. We thought of pitching in and do our bit as residents,” said Majumder.
A senior NKDA official said that it was heartening to see that the residents have come together to launch a green drive.
