Gift of life from bereaved family

An official of AMRI said that the hospital soon got in touch with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) and facilitated the extraction and distribution of Roy organs to recipients in need

Three persons underwent organ transplants in the city on Wednesday after the family of a 69-year-old man, who was declared brain dead at a hospital in Kolkata following a road accident, offered to donate organs.

Haridas Roy fell off a two-wheeler and sustained injuries in his head last week. The accident took place in Bankura’s Sonamukhi on Friday evening. Roy was admitted to AMRI Hospitals, Mukundapur as most of his family members live in Kolkata.

“His condition did not improve despite a surgery. When doctors told us that he will collapse if he was taken off the ventilator, his family approached the doctors saying that they wanted to go for organ donation,” said Kanchan Kumar Das, Roy’s son-in-law.

“It was also his wish to donate organs after his death,” Das added.

An official of AMRI said that the hospital soon got in touch with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) and facilitated the extraction and distribution of Roy organs to recipients in need.

One of the kidneys went to a 27-year-old woman who underwent the transplant at AMRI Mukundapur. Another kidney went to 42-year-old man who went underwent the transplant at SSKM Hospital. The liver went to a 50-year-old man who underwent the transplant at SSKM Hospital.

“His eyes were donated to the eye bank at Sankar Nethralaya,” said an official of the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation.
