On April 21, the trickster called Chowdhury on WhatsApp and expressed his wish to buy the chimney. The price for the chimney was fixed at Rs 10,000.

The trickster, then, transferred Re 1 to Chowdhury to earn his trust as a genuine buyer.

Later, the caller claimed that he has made a payment of the remaining Rs 9,999 and shared a screenshot of the transaction with Chowdhury.

But the amount was not credited to Chowdhury’s account.

At this point, the caller sent a QR code and asked him to scan it to get the rest of the money.

Upon scanning the QR code, a sum of Rs 4,60,000 was debited from Chowdhury’s account.

A complaint was lodged at the Kolkata police’s cyber cell. The victim got back Rs 3,72,646 of his money on the same day he registered the complaint, according to Kolkata police.

Kolkata police said in a Facebook post that “Efforts are on to recover the remaining Rs 77,694”.

However, in the Facebook post, Kolkata police did not mention whether the culprit has been apprehended or not.
