Sarthak Das and Sanghati Pal had moved into their fourth-floor flat around a year and a half back, a senior officer of the Barrackpore commissionerate said.

On Wednesday, neighbours who spotted blood on the landing of the flat, whose front door and the grille gate were locked, alerted the police.

A team from Nagerbazar police station went to the flat and broke the door down, the officer said.

Tapas Debnath, officer-in-charge of the police station, said they found Das’s body inside the bedroom.

“Das was lying in a pool of blood and there were multiple injuries on his chest, neck and stomach. The wounds had been caused by a knife. He was found in an unconscious state,” said Debnath.

The police team then took Das to a government-run health centre in Nagerbazar, where doctors declared him dead. Das’s body was then sent to the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital, in Kamarhati, for an autopsy.

The police spoke to Das’s family members, friends and neighbours and learnt that he stayed with Sanghati Pal.

“We tracked down Pal. During questioning, she said they had a fight late on Tuesday, after which she got a knife and stabbed him. She later left the flat and locked the front door and the grille gate from outside,” said another officer of the commissionerate.

Pal was then arrested.

“We have started an investigation and arrested Pal. We are trying to find out the exact reason why she stabbed Das,” said a senior officer of the commissionerate She will be produced in a court in Barrackpore on Thursday.
