Five people have been arrested from a “fraudulent” call centre in Kestopur for allegedly duping people by posing as representatives and officials of the telecom industry looking for places to set up telecom towers.
The five were arrested from a house in Kestopur by a team from the Salt Lake cyber crime police station early on Friday, a senior officer said.
“We have arrested three men and two women from the unauthorised call centre that had been set up inside a rented house in Kestopur’s Rajbanshi Para. They would dupe people on the pretext of setting up cellphone towers,” said the officer.
The callers would allegedly convince the victims that they could earn lakhs as rent from the telecom firms.
Once someone agreed, he/she would be asked to pay various fees, including “licence fees and TRAI registration fees”.
The callers would then stop all communication with the person.
