Five men have been arrested in connection with the clash outside the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in central Kolkata's Bowbazar on Sunday afternoon, which left eight persons injured.
Among those rounded up on Monday was Vicky Ali, the alleged mastermind of the clash.
The clash broke out between some Group D workers and contractual employees of the medical college and hospital. Police said Ali, a resident of Bowbazar, had led the clash.
“Ali and the four other accused are all contractual employees,” said an officer.
The fight had spilled on Eden Hospital Road, adjoining the hospital building, prompting the authorities to close gate number 5 of the campus for a few hours.
Multiple vehicles parked on the roadside were damaged during the clash.
A senior police officer said the two groups had been fighting among themselves over control of work orders in the hospital.
The trigger for Sunday’s fight, a section of the people in the neighbourhood said, was the accusation by a section of contractual staff that Group D employees were denying them their regular share of duty.
Charges of grievous assault, rioting and criminal conspiracy have been levelled against the accused.
