Five men were arrested for allegedly barging into a BL Block apartment in Salt Lake in northeast Kolkata and assaulting the members of a family on Thursday morning.

According to an officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate, Mahesh Singhania, who had moved into BL 50 with his family on April 25, mentioned in his complaint that several men had threatened him to leave the house on the same day they shifted there.

On Thursday, Bhairav Chakraborty, a former lessee of the property, allegedly led the attack, the officer said. The police have arrested Chakraborty and four others who had allegedly led the attack on the family.

Singhania said he had taken the flat on “lease from Modi — a real estate agent and promoter”.

Properties in Salt Lake are often “leased out” or “put on rent” to cover up for the sale of properties whose ownership cannot be transferred.

“Chakraborty was a former lessee who had not been paying his dues for the past three years. I took the property on lease,” said Singhania.
