Five persons were injured when the autorickshaw they were travelling in collided head-on with a hatchback car on the service lane of the VIP Road near Sreebhumi bus stand on Monday, police said.
The autorickshaw was heading towards Ultadanga at a high speed when the driver lost control and rammed into the car that was going towards the Lake Town crossing on the service lane, an officer of the Bidhannanagar commissionerate’s traffic wing said.
The impact was such that the autorickshaw mounted the divider of the service road of the VIP Road and three of the passengers were thrown out of the three-wheeler.
The car’s front also was damaged.
Alerted by the loud noise, passers-by and other motorists helped the passengers. Some alerted the traffic policemen posted nearby.
A team of traffic policemen then made arrangements for the injured passengers as well as the auto driver to be taken to a nearby government healthcare centre where they received treatment.
There were several children inside the car. As it would not start, the cops hailed a taxi and asked the driver to drop the kids home.
“The autorickshaw was being driven at high speed. The driver was zigzagging through traffic and lost control before colliding with the car,” an officer of Lake Town traffic guard said.
The cops have seized the autorickshaw and have started a case against the driver for rash driving.
Rule-flout autos are a common sight on the VIP Road. Many zig-zag through traffic while carrying more passengers than the permissible limits. There have been several accidents on VIP Road alone.
