A fireman was shot at in Dum Dum in northeast Kolkata on Tuesday morning by a person who said he had come to apologise to him.

“The bullet missed Snehasish Roy as he managed to jump to his right. The man fled on a motorbike,” said an officer of Dum Dum police station.

A few weeks ago, the accused, whose identity is still not known to Roy, had a heated altercation with him after an accident involving both men’s motorbikes.

That altercation culminated in Tuesday’s shooting, the police said.

“It was around 8.15am, I was busy at the fire station when the man came. He said he wanted to apologise and asked me to step out of the fire station,” Roy said.

“I told him there was no need to step out. But he said it would be embarrassing for him to apologise in front of others,” Roy said.

The two walked to a spot close to the Nagerbazar bus stand. The area was buzzing with pedestrians and office-goers. “He pulled out a revolver from a bag that was hanging from his shoulder and aimed at me. I somehow jumped to my right and the bullet flew past me,” Roy said.
