A fire broke out in the godown of an electronic shop on the second floor of a building on Chandni Chowk Street on Sunday evening.
Seven fire tenders were sent to douse the flames. The fire could not be put out till late on Sunday evening.
Police and fire department officials said no one was trapped inside the building as the market was closed.
“Fortunately, it’s a Sunday and the market is closed. Else, the damage could have been a lot worse. There was no one inside the godown or the market when the flames were spotted," said a resident of the locality.
State fire minister Sujit Bose went to the spot after the fire was reported around 7pm.
“Our firefighters faced a lot of problems while entering the building as the staircase was stacked with goods. Once the fire is doused, we will carry out a forensic examination of the place. If it is found that fire safety norms were violated, we will lodge a police complaint (against the owner),” Bose said.
Chandni Chowk is a congested area, lined with electric and electronic goods shops that are vulnerable to fires and others accidents triggered by short-circuits.
