A fire broke out at Astor hotel on Theatre Road on Thursday afternoon prompting the hotel officials to evacuate the rooms.
Officials of the fire department said it took three fire tenders “a few minutes” to bring it under control.
Smoke was first spotted coming out of the hotel around 4.10pm.
Motorists plying along Theatre Road slowed down to catch a glimpse of what was happening inside as guests were being escorted to the open-air compound on the ground floor minutes after the fire alarm went off.
A fire department official said the fire was reported from an electrical panel above the kitchen on the first floor of the four-storey building.
“No one was trapped or injured,” the official said.
The official added that the hotel had its fire-fighting mechanism.
An official of the hotel who did not wish to be named said the fire was doused with the help of internal fire fighting gadgets.
The guests were asked to evacuate the building and wait outside in the compound till the fire was completely extinguished and the building was declared safe again.
The 119-year-old hotel is located in the heart of Kolkata, is next to a hospital and has its main entrance directly on the ever-busy Theatre Road.
A senior police officer said: “Today, there was more smoke than flames. The cause of the fire will be ascertained by forensic officials. Luckily, the fire did not spread and was contained to a small area.”
