Students in Classes VII and VIII of Lee Memorial Girls’ High School who used to attend classes in the two rooms that are directly below the ones that were ravaged by a fire on Friday have been allotted other rooms, officials at the school said.

The central Kolkata school resumed classes on Saturday.

School officials said the two classrooms are now out of bounds for the students.

A forensic team is likely to visit the school this week to inspect the rooms that caught fire.

“The school is functioning normally. The only change is the students in Classes VII and VIII have been allotted new rooms in the same building. The rooms where they attended classes are directly below the hostel rooms that caught fire,” said Swarupa Mondal Gomes, headmistress of Lee Memorial Girls’ High School.

A fire in two hostel rooms — on the second floor of the building that houses the school, on the campus of the Lee Memorial Mission on Raja Subodh Mullick Square Road — on Friday morning triggered an emergency evacuation of the students.

Post-evacuation, the students were made to wait on a ground in the locality. No one was trapped or injured.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Students returned to Lee Memorial Girls’ High School on Saturday and collected their belongings that they had left back in the school on Friday.

“We were asked to leave our books and bags in class and move out when the fire broke out. When we went back on Saturday, our books were on our desks,” said a Class IX student.

The girl, who lives within a kilometre of the school, said teachers had asked them not to go anywhere near the wing that caught fire.

The mother of one of the students said: “We received a call from the school on Friday and were asked to escort our daughter back home. We were not told anything about the fire.”

Another parent said: “It was an accident and the situation was controlled. Because of one incident, I cannot stop sending my daughter to school.”

Female students from outside Bengal who are pursuing higher studies in Kolkata stayed in the two affected rooms. Most of their belongings were charred.

Police officers said the two affected rooms have been sealed. The others can be used.

An official in the school administration said the building has proper earthing and the students are always told to report to the authorities if they spot any spark.
