A 23-year-old man has been arrested from Bangalore for his alleged complicity in the shooting inside a coal merchant’s office in Ballygunge in south Kolkata earlier this month.
Astik Paliwar was arrested on Tuesday night from his apartment in southwest Bangalore, under Rajarajeshwari Nagar police station, and brought to Kolkata on Wednesday.
“He had helped some of the gang members who had been arrested earlier in connection with the firing,” said an officer.
Paliwar is the fifth person to have been arrested in the case.
On January 8, two men had walked into a six-storey building on Sarat Bose Road, which houses the office of a coal merchant, and fired a bullet. No one was injured.
Police said CCTV footage showed two people in jeans and jackets entering the building and taking the stairs to reach the second floor. They are also seen coming out and leaving on a bike, said an officer of the detective department.
The police till now have arrested the two men who allegedly entered the building, an alleged gang member who was a pharmacist by profession and helped the duo in getting shelter in the city and the alleged mastermind of the operation.
Like the four co-accused, Paliwar has been charged with extortion and criminal conspiracy, and under the arms act.
