Feluda is a made-in-Kolkata detective because he breathes the ethos of the city. This is apropos the article “In search of Feluda”, published on April 28.
Satyajit Ray’s imparting of a south-Kolkata identity to his beloved sleuth was, I think, a strategic move. Compared to the tradition-bound north, the comparatively younger south, in the early 1970s, was adding a rather unconventional dimension to the city with newer approach to architecture, broader avenues, construction of new landmarks etc.
Feluda, in his balanced blend of intellect, tongue-in-cheek humour and razor-sharp analysis, was the alpha male who epitomised the outof-the-box thinking that was to subsequently define that part of Kolkata. Also, the mid-70s to the early 80s, the high noon of Feluda’s career as a private eye, was witnessing the recuperation of Kolkata from the rancid hangover of the Naxalite era.
Feluda symbolised the new generation of Kolkata youth: a confident, fearless, and radical mind dwelling in a well-maintained physique. Feluda is also the quintessential Kolkata brand of the Bengali, the typical next-door “dada” (elder brother) younger souls would not only depend on but look up to, for his robust intellectuality, perceptive alertness, and deep knowledge in almost everything under the sun.

More sports events
Apropos the article “Tourney under lights in AJ Block”, published on June 9, it was a delight to read about the cricket matches.
This should be an inspiration for other blocks to arrange similar sporting events for residents sitting home and getting bored.
I, being a sport enthusiast, would love to participate in such matches and make new friends in my block, AL.
