Fake lawyer with ‘BJP links’ held in Kolkata

A 36-year-old woman who was allegedly posing as a Supreme Court lawyer has been arrested on the charge of cheating a “client” who had hired her to handle his divorce case, police said.

Nazia Elahi Khan, a resident of Baguiati in northeast Kolkata with BJP links, had allegedly taken Rs 6 lakh from the complainant.

“The accused had taken the money as fee to expedite the complainant’s divorce case. The case did not progress in three years and the complainant demanded his money back. The woman refused to refund the amount and threatened the complainant with dire consequences,” said an officer of Girish Park police station in north Kolkata.

BJP insiders said Khan was close to several party leaders. Khan, they said, would tell people she was a Supreme Court lawyer. An officer said she was not a lawyer.

Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said Khan was no longer a part of the BJP. Khan, he said, was arrested from a Trinamul leader’s house. The police said she was picked up from her house.
