A man who allegedly posed as a police officer and an aide to a senior IPS officer in the state CID was arrested after he walked into a police station in connection with a case against him and was caught in the act.

On Friday evening, a man in khaki stepped out of a white Mahindra Scorpio with a “police” sticker and walked into Burtolla police station with an air of importance, an officer told The Telegraph.

“He introduced himself as Joy Chakraborty, a sub -inspector of the 2018 batch posted in the state CID and an aide to a senior IPS officer of the CID,” the officer said.

Chakraborty, against whom a travel agency had lodged a complaint of theft and cheating with Burtolla police station, had initially sent his lawyer to the police. On being summoned, he appeared before the cops and pretended to be a cop himself, the police said.

“He showed his identity card. Then he started taking names of senior IPS officers including one who is posted at the state CID headquarters at Bhabani Bhavan now. He pretended to make a call to that officer, asking him to call our superiors,” said the officer.

Officers at the police station started cross-checking with their colleagues in the CID who said they found no officer named Joy Chakraborty in the 2018 batch of the Bengal police and neither was anyone of that name attached with the CID.

Cops started questioning him about his identity and assignments. “When he realised that his bluff was caught, he again picked up his phone and walked out of the police station slowly pretending to make a call. In a fraction of a second, he jumped into the Mahindra Scorpio and asked the driver to speed away,” the officer said.

He managed to flee from the police station but officers caught him in the next two using his mobile phone’s tower location.

Chakraborty, 30, a resident of Dum Dum Motijheel colony, has been booked under sections of cheating, impersonation, forgery and fraud.

The police found that Chakraborty used to drive a police officer’s car and had allegedly stolen the police vehicle’s log book, which he was using as his own since then and pretending to be a cop.
