A police team busted a ‘fake’ call centre and arrested eight men in Salt Lake’s Sector V on Monday night.
People working at the call centre would pose as representatives of an anti-virus software company and cheat people in the UK and the US, police said.
Officers of Bidhannagar police commissionerate said they had received a tip-off that a fraudulent call centre — IT and ITes Solutions — was operating from room 607 on the 6th floor of Merlin Infinity building at DN-51 in Salt Lake’s Sector-V.
“Based on the information, we raided the office and arrested eight persons,” said an officer of Electronic Complex police station.
The eight have been booked for cheating, forgery, fraud, criminal conspiracy and common intention.
Several such fraudulent call centres have been busted in and around Kolkata in the last few months, the police said.
“Initially, such call centres used to charge their victims for services that were never provided. Now, they have moved to the next level. The cheats are now luring their victims into downloading apps that help them know banking details of the victims. The cheats use the bank details to transfer money from the accounts of their victims,” said an officer of the Bidhannagar police.
