The parents of a deceased student at IIT Kharagpur told Calcutta High Court on Wednesday that Kharagpur Town police station had not carried out its order to exhume the remains of the body for a second post-mortem.

The lawyers representing the parents of Faizan Ahmed, who was found dead in a hostel room on the campus in October last year and buried in his hometown in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, informed the court that the

Kharagpur police had not yet contacted their counterparts in Assam for the exhumation.

The parents have been alleging that their son was murdered by senior students because he tried to resist ragging.

The lawyers submitted in the court of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha that the Assam police had told the parents

that they would not be able to act unless asked by Kharagpur Town police station.

Anirudhha Mitra, one of the lawyers representing Faizan’s parents, has written to the superintendent of police, West Midnapore, requesting him to direct Kharagpur Town police station immediately to coordinate with the Assam police and get the remains exhumed.

Justice Mantha had on April 25 ordered: “The investigating officer in the matter shall coordinate with the Assam Police and ensure that the body and/or remains are exhumed, brought to Kolkata by the state police and fresh post-mortem is conducted.… The aforesaid exercise is vital and necessary for arriving at the truth behind the death of Faizan Ahmed.”

Faizan’s mother Rehana Ahmed told The Telegraph over the phone: “We want the exhumation to be done at the earliest because Dibrugarh has been witnessing incessant rain over the past several days. But when we approached the superintendent of police, Dibrugarh, a few days back, he told us they could not proceed until the investigating officer approached them. Our lawyer wrote to the superintendent of police of West Midnapore and the officer in charge of Kharagpur Town police station on April 27 requesting them to comply with the court’s order. But as they did not act, we had to approach the court…. I have the right to know what caused my son’s death,” she said.

The matter will be heard on Friday.

Calls and text messages from this newspaper to Dhritiman Sarkar, superintendent of police, West Midnapore, failed to elicit any response.

The court gave the order on exhumation after studying a preliminary report by Ajay Gupta, a forensic medicine expert who had been engaged by the court on February 20 to carry out a forensic probe into the death.

Gupta, who will conduct the second post-mortem, told this newspaper: “Ideally the process (exhumation and transferring the remains of the body to Kolkata) should be carried out within a week’s time since the issuance of the order.”

Gupta’s report had said that the findings mentioned in the first post-mortem report and a video of the post-mortem were not enough to arrive at a final conclusion on the cause and manner of death of Faizan.
