Senior police officers said a case of cheating has been drawn up.

Bhattacharya, a defender, spent his entire 17-year playing career in Mohun Bagan. He brought laurels to the club years later as a coach.

“A few days back when I went to withdraw money from my account, I realised that there was no money there. It was nil. Close to Rs 17 lakh was in my savings account,” Bhattacharya told The Telegraph. “I have no clue how this happened. Probably my account has been hacked.”

The police said preliminary investigations revealed that small amounts of money were withdrawn over a period of time and Bhattacharya had no clue about the transactions.

Bhattacharya said he did not receive alerts about the transactions on his mobile phone. “I don’t use a smartphone. But I don’t remember sharing any OTP or my PIN with anyone,” Bhattacharya said.

Officers said they were trying to collect the transaction details from the bank. CCTV footage will be checked to try and find out whether the same person was behind multiple withdrawals from different ATMs.
