Teams of Enforcement Directorate officers on Saturday conducted raids on four properties believed to be those of Shantanu Banerjee, arrested and expelled Trinamul youth leader of Hooghly, in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitments in the government-aided schools.

The officers said they seized several documents and hard disks of CCTV footage.

The ED arrested Shantanu on March 10, after which Trinamul expelled him.

The teams visited two apartments in Chinsurah, a house in Bandel and a resort in Balagarh, in Hooghly, for the coordinated raids that began early and continued till late.

At the Balagarh resort, officers searched rows of rooms and questioned two persons who were allegedly close aides of Shantanu.

“We are trying to draw up a list of properties where Shantanu appears to have parked the proceeds of crime under the Prevention of Corruption Act. These properties seem to have been purchased from the money he collected from prospective candidates against the promise of jobs in state-run schools,” a senior officer said.

At Chinsurah, officers learnt that Shantanu had allegedly bought two apartments recently and registered them under different names. Officers spoke to the building’s developer to find out who paid for the apartments before getting carpenters to open the locks.

“There are some assets Shantanu purchased in the name of his wife, his close aides and others to evade the scanner. We collected hard disks of some CCTVs installed in these properties,” the officer said.
