An employee at a south Kolkata office has been arrested for allegedly stealing around Rs 40 lakh of employer's money over a period of several months, police said.
The accused, identified as Sajjan Singh, a clerk in the office, was entrusted with collecting money on behalf of his employer and depositing it in the bank. He allegedly kept stealing money from the collected amount.
"We received a complaint last week from a company that has its office on Bihari Doctor Road in Bhowanipore. According to the complaint, an employee who was entrusted with collecting payments from the market for the company had stolen around Rs 40 lakh over a period of six to seven months," said a police officer.
Based on the complaint, the police started a case against Singh and raided his house in Uttarpara in Hooghly district early on Sunday.
Singh was arrested from his house. "Based on his statements, we have recovered Rs 6.77 lakh, a laptop, a mobile phone and a chain that seems to be made of gold," an officer said.
The police said Singh has been booked under the IPC section dealing with criminal breach of trust.
