Educators who lost their lives to Covid but have their baton carried forward were remembered at the IIHM presents The Telegraph School Awards for Excellence 2021, 26th edition in association with The Bhawanipur Education Society College, partnered by Tutopia, held virtually on Saturday.

“I want to dedicate this event to the educators — teachers, principals and parents of children who passed away in the past year and a half; very specially to four very special friends of The Telegraph Education Foundation,” said Barry O’Brien, trustee of the foundation and host of the programme.

The four were S.M. Zaki, the founder of the Assembly of Angels Secondary School in Barrackpore, Perminder Dasani, the administrator of Chowringhee High School, Nabarun De, the principal of Central Modern School in Baranagar and Sujata Ghatak, the principal of Techno India Group Public School in Garia.

“The good news is that the next generation is continuing their work. The Zaki family, the Dasani family, the Dey family — they are continuing the good work. They are trying to be more involved in reaching out to society, drawing inspiration and motivation from the dear person they have lost. That is absolutely wonderful,” said O’Brien.

Dasani’s hard work and stellar role played by his students led to Chowringhee High School being often described as “a small school with a big heart”.

On Saturday, the institution was one of the recipients of The Telegraph Award For The School Of The Year for its role during the pandemic.

The school arranged Covid-19 vaccination camps and distributed ration among the underprivileged with the help of students, alumni, teachers and well-wishers. Till date, the school has provided dry groceries to over 500 families. The total cost of this project till date is Rs 2.24 lakh.

“You left us too early. We dedicate today’s programme to you and your incredible efforts,” said O’Brien.

The Central Modern School has contributed for scholarships in memory of Nabarun De.

“His death is a huge loss for the fraternity because he was playing a key role in the Council For The Indian School Certificate Examinations. Miss you and we are sure you are watching over us,” said O’Brien.
