In its bid to ensure a ‘green’ Diwali, the Kolkata Police will print and distribute around one lakh leaflets to create awareness among people about green firecrackers and how to identify the same. This was announced at the coordination meeting on Friday organized by the Kolkata Police with the stakeholders of the fire-cracker industry at the Police Training School.
After Calcutta High Court’s order that no fireworks other than the green crackers, bearing QR codes, will be imported and sold in the state, this was the first meeting.
Along with the Baji Bazar Association, representatives of the Pollution Control Board, fire department, CESC, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), and Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation were present at the meeting.
According to the police, the leaflets will contain information on green firecrackers and details of identification and scanning the QR code.
“The leaflet will also mention the harm caused by illegal firecrackers and why people should reject it,” a police officer added.
Despite relentless raids across the city and the state to seize illegal firecrackers, the police said unless people are aware of the hazards caused by illegal crackers, the administration could not do much.
“These raids will continue but people must reject illegal firecrackers,” said the officer.
“Special stalls with sufficient fire-fighting arrangements will be set up at the Baji Bazar,” said Shubhankar Manna, general secretary Tala Baji Bajar.
