A man who had taken an app cab ride and called a “customer care” number of the aggregator that he found on the Internet was allegedly duped out of more than Rs 8 lakh.
The call he thought he was making to the aggregator went to an alleged scamster from Jharkhand.
Hasbul Ansari, 25, was arrested near his house in Jharkhand’s Deoghar by a team from the Salt Lake cybercrime police station late on Saturday. The arrest was on the basis of a complaint lodged by 65-year-old Dipak Kumar Shaw, who lives in Salt Lake’s AH Block.
Shaw had boarded a cab in January and paid the fare in cash. The app, however, showed he had an outstanding of Rs 187 as he had not paid the fare, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.
Shaw then started looking for customer care numbers of the aggregator on the Net and came across a number that had the exact logo and text font of the aggregator.
He then dialled the number and the call was answered by a man who introduced himself as a senior manager of the aggregator. “Shaw’s call was answered by Ansari,” the officersaid.
After listening to Shaw’s problem, Ansari allegedly sent him a linkon his smartphone and asked him to click it and install an app for registering a complaint.
