A 200m-long stretch of the Seventh Cross Road in Salt Lake that leads to Island 8 from Tank 9 petrol pump has been dug up to facilitate the laying of a new cables for 5G network.
Although the dig spans an entire flank of the seventh cross road and happens to be quite deep there are no signages installed to warn motorists that they must slow down or drive down the opposite flank of the road — that leads towards the petrol pump adjacent to Tank 9 from Island 8.
Although the work has been going on for the past several weeks, till date neither the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation nor the Bidhannagar commissionerate nor the agency conducting the laying of th cables has placed boards to warn drivers and riders of two-wheelers about the ongoing construction work and that they need to divert to the other lane.
Since there is no signage, those driving towards Tank 9 and subsequently to the Karunamoyee intersection from Island 8 also get confused as they suddenly find vehicles headed in the opposite direction in their lane.
The problem gets compounded manifold at night as the area that has been dug up is not visible too clearly and people tend to brake very late after spotting the construction site.
On Monday night, The Telegraph Salt Lake saw an app cab brake hard and screech to a halt as the driver spotted the dug up zone late and barely managed not to crash the car. “I was trying to get to the airport and wanted to used the bridge that connects Salt Lake and Kestopur. Hence, I took this road but I did not know that it was dug up and I nearly crashed here,” said Shiv Kumar, the driver of the app cab. According to a senior official of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, the road has been dug up to lay cables that will enable the area to have a 5G cellular network.
“Once the cables are laid they entire road will be relaid,” the official said. The official also promised action and said that they will place signboard to warn motorists about the construction site on both the flanks of the Seventh Cross Road.
