The second day of monsoon 2022 was hot and humid since the morning and the Alipore Met office says it will remain so on days it does not rain.

Heavy rain, the Met office said, is unlikely in another four to five days.

The sky on Sunday was overcast for some time but bright and sunny for a longer duration.

Parts of the city received drizzles on Sunday evening. Kolkata received 5.7mm of rain between Saturday evening and Sunday evening.

Sunday’s maximum temperature was 34.2 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal. The minimum was 25.6, one degree below normal.

An official of the India Meteorological Department, Kolkata, said the monsoon was in its weak phase, which means no low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal that can bring heavy rain to the city and push the mercury down.

“Only light to moderate rain is expected over the next few days,” an official said.

The Met office expects a low-pressure system to start developing over the Bay from Tuesday but it would take till the end of the week for it to evolve into a system that can bring heavy rain to Kolkata.

“The monsoon may have entered the city but it is in its weak phase. It will only cause light to moderate rain in Kolkata,” said G.K. Das, director of IMD, Kolkata.

“There is a chance of a low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal. But it will take another four or five days to become strong enough to bring downpour to Kolkata and other places in south Bengal.”

He said that at times the monsoon advances into south Bengal with a low-pressure system already developed over the Bay of Bengal. In those years the onset of the monsoon coincides with heavy rain.

But in other years, like this year, the monsoon winds advance into south Bengal when the system is in its weak phase. During those times, clouds from Bangladesh trigger rain in Kolkata.

“For the next four or five days, the weather will remain hot and humid. The sky will often remain overcast and there could also be one or two spells of light to moderate rain.”

Das said a trough of low pressure was stretching from Punjab in the west to Manipur and Mizoram in the east. Since the trough is now closer to north Bengal, the districts there received heavy rain over the last few days.

“The trough is likely to come southwards in the next few days. As the trough moves towards the south, districts in south Bengal will start receiving more rain,” said Das.
