Don Bosco Park Circus has scrapped its decision to start an undergraduate college in this academic session apparently because of “issues pertaining to recruitment of teachers and infrastructure”, an official of Calcutta University said.
Father Bikash Mondal, the principal of Don Bosco Park Circus, who has been appointed principal of the college, could not be contacted as his mobile phone was switched off. He did not reply to text messages either.
The self-financing co-educational institute, to come up on the same campus as the school, has received a no-objection certificate from CU, to which the college will be affiliated.
A message uploaded on the Don Bosco website last week says: “The management regrets to inform that Don Bosco, College, Kolkata, will not begin from this academic year 2021-22.”
A notice issued by the institution on July 23 said the college would start in the current academic year and offer BSc honours in computer science, mathematics, physics and chemistry; BSc general; BCom honours and general; and bachelor of business administration courses.
Interested candidates were asked to apply online at https://dbpccollege.com/ from August 2.
An official of the university said the college authorities had last week informed the office of the inspector of colleges that they would not start the college in the current academic year because of “some issues pertaining to appointment of teachers and infrastructure”.
“We don’t know what the exact reasons are. But the college will not be started this year,” said Ashis Chatterjee, pro-vice-chancellor (academic affairs), CU.
Father Bikash Mondal had told Metro on July 24: “Although Don Bosco is starting as an evening college, in three years it intends to launch morning and day classes as well. We will build additional infrastructure... to expand the college.”
