A 24-year-old pregnant woman who also had a brain tumour underwent two surgeries, a C-section for the delivery of her daughter and another procedure to remove the tumour.

The operation to remove the tumour was performed immediately after the C-section, said officials at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, where the woman was admitted earlier this month.

Babita Devi, from Bihar’s Samastipur, underwent the operations on September 11.

Doctors at Medica said the operations were complicated and risky.

The woman was 29 weeks’ pregnant and giving birth to a baby so premature had its own challenges.

In addition, the tumour’s location was such that it was pushing against
the brain stem and was leading to reduced consciousness and loss of strength in limbs.

Doctors first thought they would schedule the two operations separately, but a steady deterioration of the woman’s condition forced them to perform
one immediately after another.

The woman has been discharged from the hospital and the baby will be released in a few days, said Mangnu Sah, Babita’s husband.
