Veteran film director Tarun Majumdar’s body will be donated to SSKM Hospital for medical research and education, his family has decided in keeping with his last wish.
Majumdar, who was admitted to SSKM Hospital with old age ailments and kidney problems on June 14, died at 11.17am on Monday because of multiorgan failure. He was 92.
The filmmaker had developed "secondary infection in his lungs" following which he was shifted to the ICU on Sunday where he was put on ventilator. As his condition deteriorated, a medical board was constituted on Monday morning.
"Tarun Majumdar passed away at around 11.17am today. He has been critical for some time and his condition deteriorated further this morning. His heart beat and pulse rate had dropped, and he had stopped responding to any treatment," an official of the hospital said.
“We’ll respect his (Tarun Majumdar’s) last wish. He wanted his last journey to be quiet,” West Bengal cabinet minister Arup Biswas said.
In her condolence message to Majumdar's family, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said, "His death has left a void in the Bengali film industry."
The four-time National Award winner and Padma Shri Majumdar was known for his heartwarming family movies. Having made his debut as filmmaker with the Uttam Kumar-Suchitra Sen starrer Chaowa Paowa in 1959, he went on to make Balika Badhu, Shriman Prithviraj, Ganadevata, Dadar Kirti, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa and Alo.
