The idol of goddess Saraswati at National High School for Girls in south Kolkata looks resplendent in a South Indian avatar sculpted by Dipankar Paul of Kumartuli. “This year, the idol is seated on the ‘annapakshi’. The sound of the veena represents creativity, the parrot is associated with speech and the ‘japa mala’ represents the powerful sound of mantras. The combined power of all of these becomes the power of knowledge,” explained Rama Subramanian, the principal of NHS Sarat Bose Road branch.
