Boroughs XII and X of the Kolkata municipal area, which covers parts of Kasba, Jadavpur and Tollygunge, are still reporting the highest number of dengue cases, civic officials said.

Wards 106 and 109, both of which are from borough XII, have so far reported the highest number of dengue cases in Kolkata this year, said officials.

Two boroughs in north Kolkata — borough I, which covers areas like Cossipore, Tallah and Belgachia, and borough III, which covers areas in and around Phoolbagan, – have also reported a rise in infections.

Over 3,400 dengue infections have been reported in the city this year till the first week of October, with nearly half of the cases being reported in the last fortnight. A CMC official said about 800 cases were reported from borough XII while 600 cases were reported from borough X since January.

“Both these boroughs cover areas in the southern and southeastern outskirts of the city. There are still many vacant plots where residents dump waste. Small containers in the waste then turn into sites for mosquito breeding,” said the official.

Sushanta Ghosh, the chairperson of borough XII, said that vacant plots and a number of under-construction buildings created perfect breeding sites for the mosquitoes.

One of the wards with a high number of cases was ward 101. Bappaditya Dasgupta, the councillor of the ward, said 75 new cases were reported last week.

An official of the KMC said fever clinics, door-to-door visits and convincing people with fevers to undergo tests were being done in both these wards.
