A youth in his 20s who had tested positive for dengue died at a city hospital on Wednesday.

Subho Bramho, the victim, was a resident of Bishnupalli in Haridevpur’s Purba Putiary on the city’s southern fringes. This was the eighth known case of dengue death in the Kolkata municipal area this year.

An official of MR Bangur Superspeciality Hospital, where the youth was admitted hours before he passed away, said Bramho was first taken to the hospital late on Tuesday. “Rapid tests of malaria and Covid were performed and both were negative,” said an official of the hospital.

Brahmo was taken back to the hospital on Wednesday morning, when his blood sample was taken for a dengue test. Doctors at the emergency department advised hospitalisation.“The patient tested positive for dengue. He remained admitted for only six hours before he passed away,” said the official of MR Bangur Hospital.

“He had been running a temperature for four days. Wednesday was the fourth day of fever.”

A doctor at Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said they always advised patients to get a dengue test done if the fever did not subside within two days. “A dengue patient can suffer quick and rapid deterioration of health. Always measure the body temperature if you are feeling feverish. Consult a doctor and follow the advice,” said a doctor.

Biswajit Mondal, councillor of Ward 114 of the KMC, which includes the area where Bramho lived, said the man suffered grave injuries in one of his arms in 2020. He underwent surgery in the arm last year.
