Defunct overhead cables were removed from about 1km of roads in several parts of the city on Wednesday. The cables are being removed from stretches of Sarat Bose Road, Southern Avenue and SP Mukherjee Road in south Kolkata and Chittaranjan Avenue in the central part of the city.

But at the pace at which the work is progressing, it may take over a decade to remove the cables.

Cable operators said they had to stop the wire removal near Rabindra Sadan for some time on Wednesday because the work was preventing traffic movement. The workers have to use ladders on the road to reach the height where cables are tied.

The operators will meet officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation on Thursday and request them to lend them some hydraulic ladders for the work. The operators are now using bamboo ladders. Only one person can climb a bamboo ladder while two can climb a hydraulic ladder, they said.
