The 42-year-old employee of New Town’s Harinalaya Mini Zoo who was gored by a male spotted deer with its antlers was discharged from Charnock Hospital on Monday, officials of the hospital said.
Prasad Barman, the injured employee, had on May 25 entered the deer enclosure in the zoo with a colleague to feed the animals when a male spotted deer charged at them.
While Barman managed to push his younger colleague out of harm’s way, he failed to save himself. The deer’s antlers pierced his small intestine.
Hospital officials said Barman, who underwent surgery, responded well to treatment and has started eating solid food. “Barman is able to walk on his own. He is limping and stooping a bit.... It will take some time for full recovery but he has been showing steady progress,” a hospital official.
Barman is a contractual employee of the state forest department. An official in the department said Barman can take leave for as many days as he wants to. “We have told him to resume duty after full recovery. Till then he will be on leave. We don’t want to put unnecessary strain on him as he needs rest. We have asked him to reach out to us if he needs any help,” said the official.
“Once Burman is fit to resume duty, we will take a call on his posting,” another official said.
