A couple were found dead inside their flat in Howrah's Chatterjeehat on Sunday afternoon, police said.

It was not clear till Sunday night if the man had killed his wife before committing suicide, the police said.

The couple often used to fight over the wife’s alleged addiction to social media and her habit of fiddling with her mobile phone, the police said.

The incident happened inside a building at 12/2 Nandalal Mukherjee Lane in Howrah. Gautam Maity, 45, who worked as manager of a bar in Howrah, and his wife Mausumi Maity, 36, were found dead in their flat that was locked from inside.

Around 2.30pm, the couple’s two daughters — one 15-year-old and the other 9-year-old — returned home from their art class. No one answered the door bell, they said.

The girls then alerted neighbours and went to Chatterjeehat police station. A police team broke open the door and found Gautam hanging from the ceiling fan in a room and his wife was lying on the floor.

“There were no injury marks on the woman. The couple were declared dead at hospital,” said an officer of the police station. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

A senior officer said he had spoken to both daughters and learnt that the couple often used to have altercations - mostly because of the woman's alleged addiction to social media.

“The daughters are the prime witness in this case. Both of them said their father used to remain upset with their mother because of her addiction. There could be other reasons, too, we are probing all angles,” said the officer.

Gautam and Mausumi's relatives have been informed.

The police station has registered a case for two unnatural deaths. Specific sections would be added only after the post-mortem is conducted, an officer said.
