Officers of Bidhannagar police said based on specific information, they conducted raid at a location near the Webel crossing in Salt Lake on Thursday and arrested the trio.

Police said they have seized several forged documents, counterfeit seals and several fake Aadhaar cards ready to be sold.

The raid was jointly conducted by the Electronic Complex police station and the detective department of the Bidhannagar police.

The police have identified the three as Asraful Islam Molla, alias Bapi, 28, Uttam Kr. Purkait, alias Sumit, 35, and Tapas Karmakar, 18. All three are from South 24-Parganas district.

They have been booked under sections of cheating, forgery, fraud, criminal conspiracy.

A senior police officer said procurement of forged identity documents is the first step towards committing an online crime.

“While investigating the online frauds, in majority of the cases it has been found that the e-wallets or the bank accounts where the swindled money is transferred, has been opened with fake identity documents. If the documents are fake, it becomes next to impossible to track the person who had opened the account,” said the officer.

“We are trying to find out whom they were supplying the fake cards and if there are other members involved,” said an officer of the Bidhannagar police station.
