Police officers probing the death of 72-year-old Kalyan Bhattacharya took his alleged killer to the victim’s house in Nagerbazar on Monday to try and recreate the events leading to the murder.
The boundary wall of the house appeared higher than the reach of Sourav Mondal, the accused. The police said Mondal showed the investigators the spot where he had scaled the wall. That section, officers said, was relatively lower in height.
“Mondal then climbed the higher wall and entered the compound,” an officer said.
The accused was also taken inside the house, where he had allegedly left Bhattacharya’s body.
“According to his statement, a scuffle broke out between him and Bhattacharya when they were standing in the portico of the house. Mondal said he hit the old man on his chest with his elbow. The injury he mentioned is corroborated by the fact that one of the ribs of the aged man was fractured,” said the officer.
A hammer, which is suspected to have been used to kill Bhattacharya, has been recovered from the garage, the police said. The cops said they were looking for the keys to the house and Bhattacharya’s gold chain which are reportedly missing.
Bhattacharya’s decomposed body was found in the Nagerbazar house on the night of September 20, after his niece informed the cops about his “disappearance”.
His BMW 6-series car, which was also missing, was later found in the possession of Mondal. The accused allegedly stole it and drove it to Digha on a fun trip with friends.
Mondal is now in the custody of the Barrackpore police.
