The owner and the managers of Rahbar Guesthouse at Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata where a fire killed one of the guests and injured two others on Saturday, have been remanded in police custody for three days.
Police said they wanted to find out about the building’s civil plan and its lack of any fire-fighting equipment .
“There are 11 rooms in the hotel. The ground floor has a number of shops and the top floor is a residential area. First, we need to find out if the owner has proper documents for setting up a commercial establishment,” said an officer.
Samimatul Aros, 60, a Bangladeshi national, who was being treated at a hospital along the EM Bypass, was in one of the first floor rooms. He suffocated to death because of the smoke from the fire at the reception early on Saturday. An electrical short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire.
Two other boarders Mainul Haque, 35, from Murshidabad and Mehtab Alam, 42, of Bangladesh received burns.
The guest house has been sealed by the police.
