The family of the 18-year-old college student who went on an outing with friends and fell into the Hooghly apparently while taking a selfie on Friday, lodged a police complaint on Monday raising allegations against some of his friends.

Police said Sheikh Sayed, a first-year student of a college in north Kolkata, could not be found till Monday evening.

His father Sheikh Illyas and mother Salma Bibi went to North Port police station on Monday and filed a complaint saying they were suspicious about some of their son’s friends.

“One of his friends came to pick him up on a motorcycle that day. He told my son that he need not eat at home because they would be dining out. One of his friends had called him over the phone. We want the police to investigate this thoroughly,” an officer said quoting from the complaint.

Based on the family’s complaint, officers of the police station questioned two of his college friends on Monday morning and summoned two others later in the evening.

A team of officers also went to the college to collect more information about the missing youth.

“Till now it is apparent that Sheikh Sayed attended a history class that started at 2.45pm on Friday. Friends who were with him told us that he fell into the river around 4.20pm,” said an officer.

According to their statements, Sayed was taking a selfie and had gone to the edge of the river bank in Bagbazar when he slipped and fell into the water.

Officers said no FIR was drawn till Monday as the allegations made by the family were “non-specific” and the youth was yet to be traced.

“We are questioning all his friends who were with him on Friday. We are also examining his call details,” said an officer at Lalbazar.
