The city sky is likely to be cloudy till around January 30 and the minimum temperature is likely to drop from New Year’s Day, the weather office said on Sunday.

There are slim chances of the city receiving rain in the next few days, though western districts of Bengal and districts in north Bengal are likely to get rain by the end of the year.

“The minimum temperature will remain in the range of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius for the next few days. The sky will also remain cloudy till around January 30,” said G.K. Das, director, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.

“The temperature will drop again from January 1, by when the sky is likely to become clear. The current rise in temperature is because of the cloudy sky.”

There is a probability of rain in districts in the western and northern parts of Bengal because of a western disturbance, said Das. “But the probability of rain in Kolkata is very slim.”

The day’s maximum temperature in Kolkata was 26.4 degrees Celsius and the minimum, 15.6.

The city shivered as the Celsius plunged to 11.2 degrees on Monday, December 20. That day’s minimum was four notches below normal.

It was also the coldest day in Kolkata since December 28, 2019, when the minimum temperature was 11.1 degrees, according to the Met records.

The minimum started rising from the middle of last week.
