“About 15 minutes into the film, a portion of the ceiling came crashing down on our head,” said Mriganka Mondal, one of the injured persons.

All the injured were seated on the balcony. The theatre was packed with around 150 people and 20 of them were on the balcony. The local administration shut down the theatre after the incident.

Kandi MLA Apurba Sarkar called on the injured at the hospital. “The injured are out of danger,” Sarkar said.

“The theatre will be inspected by the civic authorities tomorrow (Friday). This is a very old cinema hall. We hope the theatre can be repaired and opened again for the residents of Kandi,” he added.

Taraknath Mondal, the owner of the theatre, however, said the cinema was not in a poor condition. Mondal said he would find out what had led to the incident.
