A chunk of concrete fell on an elderly man at Bikash Bhavan in Salt Lake where he had gone to meet his son, who works in one of the offices in the building, on Monday afternoon.

Arijit Ghosh Dastidar,67, a resident of Sonarpur,on the southern fringes ofthe city, suffered cuts and bruises on his head andhands.

He was walking into the building when multipleconcrete chunks of the building fell.

Guards at the buildingsaid the biggest of the chunks narrowly missed landing on Dastidar’s head.

A smaller chunk, however, hit him.

Some of the guards administered first-aid to him. Then he was taken to the sub-divisional hospital in Salt Lake. He was discharged after treatment.

“I was walking through the gate of the buildingwhen I felt a searing pain on my head, face and hands. I could smell cement. When I touched my face, there was bloodall over. Guards and others came to my aid and handedme towels and antiseptic,” Dastidar said.

Alerted by the commotion on the ground floor, fire and emergency services minister Sujit Bose, whose office is in the building, came downstairs and assured Dastidar of all help.

“This building is maintained by the PWD. I have already spoken to their officials and requested them to look into the matter urgently,” said Bose.
