A three-year-old boy died in his Nonadanga home on Sunday following which his parents buried him in the burial ground, allegedly without informing about the unnatural death to the police.

Two days after the death, Rohan Mondal’s grandmother, who lives at Jibantala in South 24-Parganas, lodged a murder complaint against her son-in-law Bijon, alleging that he had killed the child.

Based on the complaint, officers of Anandapur police station have started a murder case against Bijon and submitted a prayer before Alipore court seeking permission to exhume the child’s body for post-mortem.

The police said after they received the complaint on Tuesday, a team of officers visited Bijon and Soni Mondal’s house and found from neighbours that Rohan had died in the house on Sunday.

“According to one of the neighbours, on Sunday night he saw Bijon and Soni crying with the child lying unconscious in their lap. They took him to a doctor and returned later in the night. After that, the couple went to Gobra Hindu Burial Ground for the child’s last rites,” said an officer of Anandapur police station.

“The neighbour said that the child’s father told him that Rohan had fallen into a plastic bucket full of water.”

Complainant Mina Bibi, 45, told the police that she learned about Rohan’s death on Tuesday. She also learned that Rohan was alone in the house with his father before he was found dead, the cops said.

Mina lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Bijon had killed her grandson, based on which the police have started a case under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code that deals with the offence of murder. A prayer under section 176(3) of the CrPC has been submitted before the court seeking permission to exhume the body and carry out the post-mortem to ascertain the cause of the death.

No one was arrested till Wednesday evening, the cops said.
