West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday congratulated Kolkata-born squash player Saurav Ghosal on winning a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 in Birmingham.
“Another proud moment for all of us as Saurav Ghosal from West Bengal wins the bronze medal in squash at CWG, 2022. Heartfelt congratulations to him. Your success will be an inspiration to countless others in the country. All the best for your future endeavours!” Banerjee tweeted.
Ghosal, currently ranked 15th in the world, dominated the contest against England's James Willstrop, ranked 24th globally, right from the start.
With the scoreboard declaring 11-6, 11-1, 11-4, Ghosal bagged the bronze quite comfortably on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Ghosal lost to CWG 2018 silver medallist Paul Coll of New Zealand, ranked second globally, in the semi-finals at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Centre.
It is Ghosal's maiden CWG singles medal. In 2018, he won a mixed doubles silver with Dipika Pallikal in the CWG Gold Coast edition.
