A man has been arrested on the basis of a complaint filed against him by the state government’s land department alleging that he has sold government-owned land, worth around Rs 1.21 crore, to third parties posing as the owner, police said.

“We have arrested Sudhangshu Sekhar Dutta, 50, a resident of Shyampukur Street, in connection with a case registered with the Hare Street police station on September 16,” a senior police officer said.

“Dutta had impersonated as the owner of a series of plots spread across 1.2 acres at Madhupur town near Serampore in Hooghly district and sold them to multiple buyers.

The plots are located around 40km from the city,” said the officer.

“The fraud came to light when some of the buyers found out that the plots were owned by the state government,” said an officer of the central division.

The buyers reported the matter to the land department and the department in turn lodged a complaint with the Hare Street police station, an officer said.

Dutta has been charged under sections of cheating, fraud, forgery, criminal conspiracy, the police said.

He was produced before a city court on Wednesday where he was remanded in police custody till November 3.
