Centre for gender studies comes up at Xavier’s College

The centre intends to take up research projects to have a better understanding of the regional socio-economic and cultural components of the lives of the people of South 24-Parganas

A centre for gender studies has come up on St Xavier’s College Kolkata’s Raghabpur campus.

The centre that was inaugurated on Saturday will focus on women’s rights and offer an institution for “documentation, research and teaching of gender empowerment”.

“The purpose of the centre is to empower the students with knowledge and self confidence and also facilitate awareness amongst their family members, neighbours and others with regard to gender equality. The centre intends to take up research projects to have a better understanding of the regional socio-economic and cultural components which are determining the lives of the people of South 24-Parganas...,” said Revered Dominic Savio, principal of St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous) Calcutta and also of the Raghabpur campus.

Reverend Johnson Padiyara, vice-principal of the Raghabpur campus, said the centre would analyse and provide solutions through research, faculty development programme, workshops, journal publications to break the gender bias.

Scholars from across the world will be invited to conduct sessions on gender neutrality.

Two persons have been arrested from Jamtara district of Jharkhand on Saturday for their alleged involvement in a fraud committed by calling a victim in Kolkata.

The victim lost Rs 5 lakh, said officers of the cyber cell in Lalbazar.

The police identified the arrested two as Pradhum Mondol and Dhananjay Mondol.
