The Celsius dipped over three notches in Kolkata on Friday following a temporary comeback of northwesterly winds.

The mercury is expected to rise slightly over the next couple of days and then dip briefly before starting to rise steadily again, according to the Met forecast.

The minimum temperature on Friday was 16.8 degrees Celsius, a notch below what is usual for the second week of February.

A day ago, the minimum temperature was 20.1 degrees, four notches above normal.

Barring late night and the early hours, the effect of the dip was not prominent because the day temperature stayed around 29 degrees.

As the sun came out, people felt warm.

“A trough of low pressure was hovering over Sikkim and north Bengal. The trough has dissipated, paving the way for the northwesterly winds to enter Kolkata,” said a Met official, explaining the reason for the dip in the Celsius.

“The minimum temperature is likely to rise slightly over the next couple of days. From the start of next week, the northwesterly winds will have an impact again and drag the mercury down but for a brief period, 48 hours maybe. After that, the temperature is expected to be on the rise again,” the official said.
