The CBI on Wednesday froze several bank accounts of Jiban Krishna Saha, a Trinamul Congress MLA from Murshidabad, who has been arrested in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitments in government-aided schools, officials said.
Saha was arrested on Monday morning.
CBI officials said on Wednesday the accounts that had been frozen were used to park proceeds of crime.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday wondered whether the agency had enough evidence against the MLA, without naming him.
“Do they have evidence? Did they count the money? Did you see it yourself?” Mamata asked at a news conference.
CBI officers said investigations had revealed that Saha and his wife owned land in Birbhum, Murshidabad and Jhargram. The properties are worth a few crores of rupees.
Ayan Sil’s parents
The ED on Wednesday questioned arrested businessman Ayan Sil’s parents — Sadananda and Amita — about their bank accounts and whether they were aware of all the transactions through the accounts.
Officers said the two were questioned because it emerged that Sil had used their accounts to accept and transfer money linked to irregularities in appointments in schools.
