A car plying along the Baruipur Bypass — an extension of EM Bypass on the southern fringes of the city — crashed into a roadside tea stall near Narendrapur early on Monday, police said.
The car came to a halt when it was about to fall into a roadside canal, police officers said.
The police suspect the car was moving at a high speed and the driver lost control of it.
The accident happened in Malancha, in the interiors of Sonarpur, around 20km from the heart of the city.
“Other than the driver, there was no one in the car. The driver probably got scared and fled. The car crashed into a roadside tea stall before coming to a halt. Had it not stopped, it could have fallen into a canal,” said an officer at Sonarpur police station.
The police said the car was lifted from the canal bank and handed to its owner later in the day.
Heavy goods vehicles as well as cars, motorcycles and slow-moving vehicles ply through the Baruipur Bypass, which runs parallel to NS Road.
A resident of the area said the stretch is “dangerous” as the road is wide and most vehicles tend to speed.
